Special Election 4/21
Early Voting Goes Thru Saturday 4/18
HAVE YOU VOTED YET?
In a new op-ed, Speaker Don Scott and Senator L. Louise Lucas make it clear that Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans are trying to tilt the playing field before the 2026 midterms by manipulating maps in states across the country.
“When leaders believe they may lose, they change the rules without citizens’ approval,” they wrote. “It is Trump insulating himself from accountability.”
Virginia has a choice, we can sit back while that happens, or we can act.
Voting YES on this amendment is about restoring fairness and leveling the playing field. This redistricting amendment is a temporary measure that will leave Virginia’s bipartisan Redistricting Commission in charge when lines are scheduled to be redrawn in 2031.
We’re seeing a significant wave of misinformation around the Virginia redistricting referendum—across social media, mailers, texts, and even yard signs. Much of it is misleading and misrepresents positions on the amendment, making it harder for voters to get clear, accurate information. We need all hands on deck from now until Election Day to support Get Out the Vote efforts!
Get Involved!
There are a lot of ways YOU can help. Please visit our April 21st Election web page for opportunities to help.

Talking Points - Myth VS Fact
❌ MYTH: “Virginia Democrats are cheating by doing a power grab by mid-decade redistricting.”
✅ FACT: Virginia did not start mid-decade redistricting. States like Texas, Ohio and Missouri have already drawn maps that strongly favor one party. Their approach was forced and permanent. Virginia’s approach is a choice to voters and temporary.
👉 Virginia is responding to an existing national trend on mid-decade redistricting — not creating it. The concern isn’t one state acting — it’s whether the overall system is balanced. Should Virginia stay locked into old maps while others update theirs?
-----------
❌ MYTH: “Republicans will lose their voice in Virginia.”
✅ FACT:No one loses their right to vote or run for office.
• Republican voters still vote
• Republican candidates still run
• Seats can still be competitive
👉 This changes district lines — not people’s voices.
-----------
❌ MYTH: “This only helps Virginia Democrats.”
✅ FACT: This is about the balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives
👉 Changes in one state affect national representation, not just local politics.
Both chambers of Congress introduced resolutions to restrict Trump’s power over this illegal and unwanted “war of choice” but both resolutions were voted down. The failed resolutions would have reaffirmed Congress’s sole authority to declare war as is established in Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution.
In addition, the administration has proposed another increase in defense spending, up to $1.5 trillion, up from $1 trillion in 2026.

May 1st, 2026 will be a Workers Over Billionaires national day of action. Workers, students, and families will be marching, rallying, training, walking out and taking action together to demand:
Tax the rich so our families, not their fortunes, come first.
No ICE. No war. No private army serving authoritarian power.
Expand democracy. Hands off our vote.
The coalition is asking that you do NOT 1) go to school, 2) go to work or 3) shop.

We are excited to launch our new Community Democracy Project. Many people care about democracy—but feel overwhelmed or unsure how to get involved. We’re changing that by offering simple, welcoming ways to learn and take action.
Through Civics 101 workshops, voter outreach, craftivism events, and “Adopt a Bill” seminars, we help people build the knowledge and confidence to participate in real, meaningful ways. We also train volunteers to lead future efforts, growing our impact across the community.
As Virginia voters prepare to consider key constitutional amendments, we’re providing clear, nonpartisan education and tools to cut through misinformation and stay engaged.
At its core, this project is about helping everyday people move from concern to action—and strengthening democracy together.
To learn more please join us: Thurs. April 9 - 6:30pm - 8:00pm - Civics and Public Information Working Group Kick-off Meeting.

We wouldn't have received the hundreds of positive responses to the event without them.

We had a fantastic time at the No Kings Protest as hundreds of people joined our community art project, titled Our “Why” Knots.
Participants wrote on strips of fabric about why they are getting active. People wrote about protecting democracy, about welcoming our immigrant neighbors, about wanting our LGBTIA+ friends and family to flourish, about providing safe schools and communities for our children, and many more reasons for coming out for protests and continuing to take action.
Each fabric strip was tied onto our frame, and together we created the shape of a crown. At the end of the day, we used red ribbons to cross out the crown and complete the No Kings symbol.
Whether you had a chance to participate with us this time or not, we hope you’ll take some time to think about your “Whys” and use them as the inspiration and purpose to take the next small action. As with our communal art project, we are stronger together!

The 14th Amendment!
Birthright citizenship in the U.S., guaranteed by the 14th Amendment since 1868, means nearly anyone born on U.S. soil is a citizen regardless of their parents' status. Rooted in the 1608 British "Calvin’s Case," this legal concept (jus soli) is used by over 30 countries, including Canada and Mexico.
Fun Facts About Birthright Citizenship:
Ancient Roots: The foundation of birthright citizenship, known as jus soli (right of the soil), was applied in 1608 with Calvin's Case, establishing that anyone born within the King's dominion was a subject.
More Than Just the US: At least 30 countries grant citizenship based on birth on their territory, meaning the U.S. is not unique in this practice.
Diplomat Exception: The only "natural" exceptions to birthright citizenship are children born to foreign diplomats, who are not considered under U.S. jurisdiction.
Civil War Origin: Birthright citizenship was officially cemented in the Constitution by the 14th Amendment in 1868, mainly to ensure citizenship for formerly enslaved people and their children.
The Wong Kim Ark Case (1898): The Supreme Court ruled that a man born in San Francisco to Chinese immigrant parents was a citizen, confirming that parents' citizenship status does not restrict their children's right to birthright citizenship.
Economic Impact: Beneficiaries of birthright citizenship are projected to contribute $6.5 trillion to the U.S. economy over the next 50 years.
Not Always Universal: Until the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924, many Native Americans were not considered citizens under birthright citizenship rules.
Trump issued an executive order on his first day of this term seeking to end birthright citizenship. Lower courts have ruled that his order was unconstitutional and now the Supreme Court will rule by July 4. You can read more here: PBS News - Fact-checking Trump on birthright citizenship and birth tourism before Supreme Court hears arguments.
