What Did Advocacy Day Cover?
Members of the Immigration Working Group participated in Refugee Council USA’s Advocacy Days June 9 and 10 2026 on Capitol Hill as part of the Virginia Delegation. The purpose of Advocacy Days is to establish, maintain, and build relationships with key congressional offices to galvanize and activate bipartisan support for refugee, asylum, and humanitarian programs, lay the foundation for directly-impacted leaders to advocate in their own communities, and ensure that diverse constituents’ voices are heard by their elected leaders. The Virginia delegation met with the staff of 9 members of Congress, including Congressman Walkinshaw, Congressman Vindman, Senator Kaine, and Senator Warner.
What can you do to support?
Become an Advocate: Sign up for RCUSA’s Action Alerts directly on their website so you know exactly when to contact our representatives regarding urgent, time-sensitive refugee legislation.
Share Your Story: Participate in national storytelling campaigns (like the #WeWillWelcome campaign) by submitting a story about why our community cares or your experiences at local vigils. You can connect with RCUSA coalition partners like Church World Service (CWS) to amplify these stories.
Volunteer Locally: Support the mission on the ground by working with local Virginia partners to help co-sponsor a newly arrived refugee family or assist with community integration. You can find direct volunteer opportunities through the Virginia Department of Social Services Office of New Americans or organizations like the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Richmond.
